An upcoming Discovery special shines a light onto of the most mysterious creatures of the deep with help from our friends at Triton Submarines. On Sunday, January 27th, US audiences will see the first-ever footage of a giant squid in its natural habitat. The squid is the focus of the special, “Monster Squid: The Giant is Real”, which finally puts to rest the debate that stories of the kraken are just tall tales. This amazing footage was captured last summer when a team of marine scientists, filmmakers and submersible pilots dove into the ocean 55 times in an attempt to spot this elusive creature. Triton pilot Jim Harris led the dives that went as deep as 600 meters below the surface. “The entire expedition team grew progressively anxious as the days and dives passed without any sight of the Giant Squid. When the squid finally appeared, it was truly an extraordinary moment filled with excitement, awe and wonder. I along with the whole Triton team, am very proud to have been a part of this history making event,” Harris said.

The Discovery special, MONSTER SQUID: THE GIANT IS REAL airs Sunday, January 27 at 8PM ET/PT as the season finale of CURIOSITY.
