Cannes 2012: Oyster 725

The sleek, low profile of the Oyster 725 sailing yacht is sure to attract admiring glances, but the interior is equally interesting. Its living area is cozy yet spacious, making the most of the available interior volume. The main deck is open and clutter-free, allowing for easy walkaround access as well as unimpeded 360-degree views.

Mariette of 1915 Wins Pendennis Cup

The breathtaking 42-meter (138-foot) schooner Mariette of 1915 seized the top prize at the 2012 Pendennis Cup regatta, sailed July 2-7 in Falmouth Bay on England’s extreme southwest coast. 42: Maltese Falcon

This ultra-modern three-mast schooner with a steel hull, rotating carbon masts and an innovative DynaRig sail design, is unmistakable for any other yacht. Commissioning owner Tom Perkins worked closely with Perini Navi, Dijkstra & Partners and interior designer Ken Freivokh, and wrote extensively about the experience before deciding to sell the yacht many consider his “brainchild”.

32: Eos

If you include the bowsprit, this three-master schooner is the world’s largest sailing yacht. Eos hails from a shipyard not normally associated with sailing; German custom superyacht builder Lürssen only built one other sailing yacht, the 133’ Twirlybird in 1993.

Hemisphere: Lorima Carbon Masts

Lorima, a 10-year-old company that specializes in carbon composite masts and spars, is located in a former submarine facility, which played a key role during World War II. The bomb-resistant facility built by the Germans to conceal their U-boats during the war, closed as a French Navy facility in the early 1990s. It is now home to various businesses, including the company that was contracted to build the main mast of the world’s largest catamaran.

Wally’s 50m Better Place

This is not Wally’s first attempt to push the bar. But its latest creation indeed broke records. Launched in Ancona, Italy, the 165-foot (50-meter) Better Place is the world’s largest carbon sloop and also the first sailing yacht to earn RINA’s Green Star additional certification (for minimal environmental impact).

Pendennis Hemisphere: The Year Of The Cat

The world’s largest catamaran, sail or power, Hemisphere is an exceptional yacht for world exploration. This 145-foot sailing catamaran offers an enormous amount of space and a décor that is utterly luxurious without being ostentatious.

The 2012 St Barths Bucket

The Bucket started 25 years ago in Nantucket as a low-key gentleman’s race with a mere seven boats. Since, the phenomenon of the Bucket has transcended racing. It is a giant commotion and celebration of all things yachting—wind, water, elegance, luxury, freedom and unadulterated fun.

Vitter’s Sarissa: Adventure On The Seven Seas

The “sarissa” was a very long spear used in ancient Greek warfare: robust and efficient, it rushed along at lightning speed finding its mark…This is what Vitters’ 140-foot sloop Sarissa does.
