World’s Largest Yachts

38: Athena

Four years of work and the combined talents of designer Pieter Beeldsnijder (who did the exterior styling and interior design, with a décor by Rebecca Bradley), naval architects Gerard Dijkstra & Partners and Royal Huisman, as well as hardware and sailing rig by Royal Huisman’s subsidiary Rondal went into creating this sophisticated yet classic three-mast schooner bearing the name of the Goddess of Wisdom.

37: Phoenix2

This motoryacht marks the return of the prow figure but, unlike many of the traditional wood carvings found on the prow of earlier vessels, particularly common on 16th century galleons, this “figurehead” is a bird, not a warrior or a woman.

36: Nero

Endowed with the sophisticated amenities of the most modern yacht and the romantic appeal of nostalgic classic steamships, Nero makes references to the designs of the 1930s, but she isn’t a literal interpretation of any one historic vessel.

35: Dubawi

Platinum Yachts of Dubai converted a small passenger ship into a private yacht, named Dubawi (also the name of a stallion, the offspring of the famous Dubai-based Millenium). The grand-scale undertaking was second only to Platinum Yachts’ largest project—Dubai (No. 2 on the list in 2012).

34: Nahlin

Although facts pertaining to the restoration of this historic British-built yacht are largely unavailable, rumors abound. Perhaps Nahlin’s future is destined to be as extraordinary as her past. Widowed heiress Lady Yule wanted to see the world and commissioned the glorious yacht in 1929, circumnavigating the globe before making the yacht available for charter.

33: Tatoosh

Paul Allen purchased Tatoosh in 2001 for a reported $100 million before ordering Octopus from the Lürssen shipyard. Styling is by Kusch yacht and interior design by Terence Disdale. Twin 3,360 hp Deutz MWM engines power the yacht, which is a common sight in Cannes during the film festival and major conventions.

32: Eos

If you include the bowsprit, this three-master schooner is the world’s largest sailing yacht. Eos hails from a shipyard not normally associated with sailing; German custom superyacht builder Lürssen only built one other sailing yacht, the 133’ Twirlybird in 1993.

31: Mayan Queen

Tim Heywood and Terence Disdale collaborated on this yacht launched in 2008 allegedly for mining billionaire Alberto Bailleres. Bailleres, one of Mexico’s richest entrepreneurs has diversified investments in mining, insurance, retail and commercial real estate, and figures on Forbes’ 2012 list of billionaires with a fortune estimated at 16.5 billion.

30: Indian Empress

Vijay Mallya, chairman of the UB Group, which includes Kingfisher beer and an airline by the same name, purchased the yacht, formerly used by the Emir of Qatar, in 2006. The list price at the time was $113 million, although the sales amount was not disclosed.

29: Palladium

Michael Leach Design created Palladium to suit the lifestyle of an active entrepreneur they had worked with on the 205-foot Amels Solemar, his previous yacht. The design reflects the owner’s love for watersports. The designers were tasked with creating lots of headroom inside and sporty lines outside, and opted for design solutions that yield a radically new styling.
