World’s Largest Yachts

48: Ecstasea

Terence Disdale designed Ecstasea, which was built under a strict confidentiality agreement at the Royal Van Lent shipyard for Feadship. Despite secrecy surrounding the yacht at the time of her release, information about her build has trickled out over time.

47: Seven Seas

Oceanco, Nuvolari-Lenard, Azure Naval Architects and the Wright Maritime Group collaborated on this beautiful vessel, spotted in Fort Lauderdale and the Bahamas following a busy season in the Caribbean. She is likely to appear in the Med this summer, as her American owners designed her as much for their personal enjoyment as to entertain large parties.

46: Kingdom 5KR

Adnan Kashoggi, once a well-known arms dealer, ordered a yacht designed by Jon Bannenberg. The yacht kept a fairly high profile, appearing on the big screen in the James Bond flick “Never Say Never.” Real estate mogul Donald Trump was the yacht’s next owner and renamed her Trump Princess. Prince Al Waleed bin Talal bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud bought the vessel next, which became Kingdom 5KR.

45: Arctic P

Arctic P, originally built as an icebreaker tug, represents one of several conversion projects undertaken by renowned Claus Kusch at the Manoel Island Dockyard in Malta. The steel hull workboat was reinvented as a luxury expedition yacht, just as capable of negotiating the ice floes of the Polar regions as the azure waters of the South Pacific.

44: Musashi

The second-largest Feadship launched to date was built at the De Vries Makkum yard. De Voogt designed the exterior and Sinot Design was responsible for the interior. Feadship kept the project under wraps and the summer launch was very discreet, but you can’t keep such a vessel secret for long.

43: Fountainhead

You are not seeing double. This is indeed a new yacht, which looks very closely related to Musashi (already on our list last year). Mum is the word on this, one of the latest yachts built at Feadship. De Vries delivered the yacht in July 2011, actually the same month that Musashi left the Makkum yard.

42: Maltese Falcon

This ultra-modern three-mast schooner with a steel hull, rotating carbon masts and an innovative DynaRig sail design, is unmistakable for any other yacht. Commissioning owner Tom Perkins worked closely with Perini Navi, Dijkstra & Partners and interior designer Ken Freivokh, and wrote extensively about the experience before deciding to sell the yacht many consider his “brainchild”.

41: Asean Lady

Brian Chang’s Yantai Raffles is responsible for Nero, the Top 100 yacht resembling the historic Corsair. Back in 2004, the versatile shipyard also launched Asean Lady, the only yacht in the world based on a proa design that has been used for more than 2,000 years for fishing crafts throughout the Pacific region.

40: Nirvana

In April 2012, the Oceanco crew bid farewell to the latest yacht to come of its yard in Ablasserdam. Nirvana, the newest born in a line of fine superyachts, has a few stylistic features in common with an earlier Oceanco yacht. And that probably has a lot to do with the fact that the yachts share the same design team: Australian Sam Sorgiovanni and naval architecture firm Azure.

39: Ice

Built to be one of 2005’s most environmentally friendly yachts, Ice incorporates energy efficient diesel-electric power, sophisticated noise- and vibration-reduction technology and exhaust emission control systems. Tim Heywood and Terence Disdale collaborated on the design of the contemporary vessel, which was the first yacht that Lürssen fitted with Azipod propellers.
