Cannes 2012: Greenline Ocean Class 70

Built by Seaway Group based out of Slovenia and Italy, the Greenline yachts have already been making a name for themselves. After the successful launch of the Greenline 33 Hybrid, research and development progressed in earnest on the development of a super-efficient hull design. This year in Cannes, Greenline will debut the Ocean Class 70, the first yacht to boast their hybrid-ready Superdisplacement® hull.

Oceanographic Route Optimization Trial Yields Significant Results

Applied oceanography specialist Tidetech presented the results of a recent route optimization trial with a major cruise line at the Green Ship Technology (GST) conference in Copenhagen in March. Company managing director Penny Haire said the trial had been successful and significant fuel savings had been demonstrated through the use of ocean current data.

RINA Grows Greener

You might think that by their very nature, sailing yachts would qualify as “green” machines. Who knew a vessel powered primarily by the wind could be judged greener still? The recently launched 164-foot (50-meter) Wally Better Place is the first sailing yacht to receive RINA’s Green Star environmental notation, in part, because she is equipped with the latest Siemens/Caterpillar diesel-electric propulsion system.

Sun-Powered Circumnavigation a Success

Even considering all means of transportation, the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar is the first vehicle to successfully circumnavigate the globe solely using solar energy. After more than 19 months, the largest solar-powered ship ever built crossed the finish line in Hercule Harbour in Monaco May 4. The journey of 32,286 miles took the vessel and its crew through all the oceans and touched every continent.

April/May Events

Free time is a luxury, so why not spend it doing something you enjoy? Here we showcase two events in the US promoting yachting, ocean conservation, or the luxury lifestyle.

Cerion Energy

Fuel costs are on the rise again and while this may not be the biggest ticket item in a yacht’s operation, fuel efficiency still is a big deal for both private and charter yachts. In addition to economy, the yachting industry is also looking for ways to be more environmentally friendly and is experimenting with solutions like alternate fuels, hybrid engines and new types of propulsion.

SeaKeepers Adds New Initiatives For Ocean’s Sake

At the Yacht & Brokerage Show, the non-profit organization held its soiree in a private Miami Beach home. Hostess Norma Quintero graciously opened her doors to a few hundred guests that included new members and long-time supporters, many of whom donated wonderful prizes for a classic silent auction—everything from original works of art from Guy Harvey to golf and wine cruises, to a test drive in a brand-new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport.

Dancing With the Stars

The Mayans were not navigators of the seas, but they lived under the night sky and observed the movements of the stars and passed on knowledge generation to generation. They invented the “zero,” made sophisticated calculations, created a calendar and predicted celestial events, like eclipses far into the future. The Polynesians were the master mariners of history. Two thousand years before Europeans ventured across the Western Ocean, they navigated thousands of miles of open Pacific, with their entire families, to find tiny islands by the declination of stars.

SeaKeepers Society Announces New Research Efforts

The International SeaKeepers Society is looking for a few good yachts for a good cause. The group, long associated with installation of ocean data gathering instruments on superyachts, has announced the creation of what it calls the Scientific Vessel of Opportunity yacht fleet. The program offers yacht owners and crew the opportunity to host leading scientists on vital research missions aboard their yachts.
