After nearly a year at the bottom of the Mediterranean off the town of Porticello on the Sicilian coast, salvors have successfully raised the 86-meter Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian. The yacht sank while at anchor in a violent storm estimated to have winds in excess of 70 knots last August with the loss of seven of the 22 guests and crew aboard. The dead included the yacht’s owner, British entrepreneur Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy; American lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda and the yacht’s chef Recaldo Thomas. A salvage diver died in an earlier attempt to raise the yacht. The mast, one of the tallest ever installed on a yacht, was cut away before the three-day final hull-lifting began. The hull was towed to a town near Palermo where investigators will attempt to determine the exact cause of the sinking.
