When the FAA approved the creation of a Light Sport Aircraft category, as well as the Sport Pilot License, it opened up a world of consumer-available aircraft. Icon Aircraft, a Southern California-based company, offers an attractive option. The Icon A5 was designed for the consumer powersport market and can operate from both land and water, but it’s the plane’s folding wings that make it a viable option for the yacht market. The company’s two-passenger model can reach a maximum speed of 120 miles per hour and, when the wings are collapsed, it is only 8.5 feet (2.6 meters) wide. The base price for the Icon A5 is approximately $189,000.
