The 2013 Art Basel in Switzerland marked the event’s 44th anniversary. Now with over 333,681 square feet (31,000 square meters) of exhibition space, Art Basel saw approximately 70,000 visitors walking its galleries this year. Featuring both new and established artists, this contemporary art fair is a huge draw for collectors, evidenced in part by the number of private jets reported to have landed in the area during the festival: over 100 by one count. This year the show included major sales of classic pieces—such as the 1960 surrealist “Une peu de l’ame des bandits (a little of the spirit of bandits)” by Rene Magritte—to galleries of art on display, but not for sale—such as the “Unlimited” gallery featuring work by Ai Weiwei, Antony Gormley, and Chiharu Shiota.
