Moonen Shipyard is ready to deliver its largest motoryacht to date, a 138-foot (42-meter) custom yacht called Sofia. She is the third yacht Moonen has built for the same owner. At the launch party, the owner confessed he is considering commissioning an even larger project, which dovetails nicely with Moonen’s expansion plans.

Stolk Marimecs provided Sofia’s naval architecture. Exterior styling, which blends the rugged looks of an explorer yacht with modern superyacht design, results from a collaboration between Moonen’s in-house team and yacht designer René van der Velden. Art-Line Interiors created an interior scheme that features oak, Zebrano and Concetto marble, featured prominently in the custom artwork displayed in the yacht’s atrium. Technological highlights include a thermal camera on the mast and Man-Overboard (MOB) system with personal tracking. But, perhaps, the most talked-about feature is the yacht’s personal sub able of taking three passengers to a depth of 330 feet (100 meters). It was central to the yacht’s design. In fact, not long after Moonen started construction, the owner asked for a four-foot hull-length extension in order to accommodate the three-man sub, rather than the two-man model that originally was specified. Moonen also created a custom launching system for the sub that, like the rest of Sofia, meets MCA and Lloyd’s classification standards.
