The 2013 Bucket marked the first time in 76 years that five J-Class yachts were in the same place at the same time to compete with one another. The J’s on hand were Hanuman, Lionheart, Ranger, Velsheda and Rainbow. And it is a true testament to a handful of owners’ love of tradition, coupled with insanity, that has led to a resurgence of the J-Class.
Riva is celebrating its 170-year legacy with a beautiful look back at the lives these boats have touched and the impact they’ve had both on the industry and the culture over that time. Below is an excerpt from the commemorative book the company released this year.

At the Yacht & Brokerage Show in Miami, Italian yachtbuilder Sanlorenzo announced the arrival of a new CEO, Fulvio Dodich. We sat down with Dodich, a former high-level Ferretti executive, to discuss his new role, alongside a former competitor, Sanlorenzo founder and majority shareholder Massimo Perroti.
Custom yachtbuilder Logos Marine Ltd. has launched the first 110-foot-6-inch (33.7-meter) power catamaran Quaranta, christened SuperMaran, for Curvelle. Curvelle’s founder and CEO Luuk van Zanten assembled an A-list team to bring his dream to fruition.
This is no myth. The next Riva to set the tone for years to come will be a 27-knot, 122-foot aluminum planing yacht, and it will be built in Ancona, Italy, at the CRN shipyard.
The future looked bright for the yachting business after the recent Yacht & Brokerage Show in Miami Beach, which lined Collins Avenue with one of the biggest fleets in its 25-year history. Exhibitors of everything from motoryachts to water toys to bottom paint gave the show glowing reviews.
It’s a gorgeous cool day under a clear blue Miami sky and I’m on board the new Fairline Targa 62GT. It’s my second chance to explore this sleek boat, which debuted at the 2012 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. While I had a good tour then, there’s nothing like experiencing a boat in motion to truly appreciate the thought behind the design.
