SHIPYARD: Freire Shipyard, Spain

Located in Vigo, Spain, the Freire Shipyard, established by Paulino Freire in 1895, specializes in commercial shipbuilding (tugs, fishing boats, patrol vessels, etc.). Little wonder, then, that this expedition-style vessel first managed to avoid scrutiny. Still, the very private Pegaso eventually had to take to the water, which meant that yacht enthusiasts everywhere would try to find out about her. Mark Berryman designed the interior of this steel-hulled bluewater vessel born in Galicia, and H2 and Moore Design did the exterior. She may be on a mission, but Pegaso is far from lacking on luxuries with 9,472 square feet of space spread over four decks. The owners enjoy a penthouse deck with private terrace and panoramic views, of course. Pegaso’s mission will be to help researchers worldwide assess the health of the oceans. She carries a five-passenger submarine able to dive to a depth of 524 feet (or 160 meters) and a scientific lab located forward of the tender bay. In addition to two large tenders and a collection of PCWs, she carries a SOLAS rescue tender on the bow. The helideck is rate for an EC 130. Perhaps most amazing of all, she is said to have a range of 10,000 nm at 14 knots. She is also available for charter through Edmiston as central agents. Pegaso is expected to be at the 2012 Monaco Yacht Show. There are plans to explore around the Mediterranean, Caribbean and the South Pacific in late 2013.
