Pelorus
LENGTH: 377ft. 3in (115m)
SHIPYARD: Lurssen, Germany
YEAR: 2003
Although he already owned several luxury yachts, Russian Tycoon Roman Abramovich was so impressed by Pelorus that he purchased her from her commissioning owner during her maiden voyage in 2003. Built by Lürssen at a parent shipyard, this impressive yacht draws inspiration from Carinthia VII and has an exterior design by Tim Heywood. Terence Disdale designed the award-winning and relaxed interior. Disdale also created the interiors of Abramovich’s yachts Ecstasea (now sold) and Sussuro, a 160-foot Feadship. Architectural modifications, including the addition of a forward helipad and zero-speed stabilizers, personalized the yacht. Controlled from a single joystick and powered by twin 3600-hp Wartsila engines, Pelorus is said to have a 20-knot top speed. In 2008, Pelorus made an extended visit in Hamburg at the Blohm + Voss shipyard. Abramovich’s ex-wife, Irina, was identified as the yacht’s next owner after she and Roman divorced. However, recent reports point to Forbes-ranked billionaire and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee David Geffen, as Pelorus’ lucky new owner. Geffen, a college dropout who made a fortune with his record labels and Dream Works, is said to also own Rising Sun.
