Oceans 12: A Year In Review

Market contraction notwithstanding, 2012 has been a most interesting year in the yachting world. It is difficult to cover all that has happened in a few pages, but we attempted to bring you a snapshot. Our wandering editors highlighted a few of the noteworthy happenings of the past 12 months, which may lead to yet more exciting things soon to come.

Oceans 12: Benetti’s Next Step

In Cannes, the Azimut Benetti Group unveiled a new hull and propulsion combination for future Azimut Grande models. With Azimut styling and DNA but built under the Benetti umbrella, the range currently includes yachts from 100 to 120 feet. A 140-foot flagship (pictured) is under development.

Oceans 12: Iguana 24

Judging from the reactions at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, this yet-unclassified craft has plenty of appeal. The Iguana 24 is still a prototype, but the Iguana 29 is already in construction at the shipyard in Normandy, France. The brainchild of a former Accenture executive, the Iguana craft is an amphibious vehicle moved by rubber tracks on land and a Mercury outboard on water.

Oceans 12: ANC Active Noise Canceling

The Active Noise Canceling (ANC) system installed on the 197-foot (60-meter) CRN Darlings Danama (see Yachts International, September 2012) is part of a wider research project that started in 2008. In partnership with VideoWorks, Team Italia and Isel, and a number of regional research institutions, CRN developed this system to obliterate machinery noises.

Oceans 12: Sea Axe Garcon

The Damen Shipyards Group may not be a household name in yachting circles, but it definitely created a buzz in Monaco when the 220-foot (67.15-meter) Sea Axe Garçon pulled into Port Hercules. Built by Damen and marketed by Amels, this super-cool fast-support vessel combines the best of the commercial and yachting worlds.

Oceans 12: Couach 5000

Couach’s flagship was five years in the making. During that time the company went through several ownership and leadership changes and the tragic death of its young CEO. New investors Nepteam took over in November 2011. Through it all, Couach continued to work on this impressive and voluminous Kevlar-and-carbon composite yacht, the largest such yacht built in France.

Oceans 12: Rossinavi Aslec 4

You may remember that earlier this year we presented you with “a splendid surprise” from Viareggio-based Rossinavi. The superyacht Numptia has a fantastic interior by Achille Salvagni and styling by Tommaso Spadolini. Spadolini also collaborated with Rossinavi on the beautiful 148-foot (45-meter) Aslec 4.

Oceans 12: Palladium SiMON GOLD

At the Monaco Yacht Show, Palladium introduced its integrated glass bridge system dubbed SiMON GOLD, designed to put the ship’s monitoring at the captain’s fingertips.
